Housecall Pro API Guide for Contractors

One-line verdict: The richest event alerts in this directory — locked behind the top plan, with a key that opens everything. Openness: 3 / 5 — rated 3 because the webhook catalog is genuinely excellent, but API access requires the MAX plan, the single API key is unscoped, and most endpoint-level detail beyond the events is UNVERIFIED.

The connection that works

Rung 1 — Direct connection, if you are on MAX. Housecall Pro has a public API, and its webhook catalog — the list of moments it will announce the instant they happen — is the richest verified in this directory: customer events, estimate events (including estimate sent and individual option approvals), invoice events including invoice.payment.* payment events, plus job, appointment, and lead events. For follow-up automation, that list is gold. A payment landing, an estimate viewed and approved, a job finishing — each one can trigger the next step immediately, with no polling and no guessing.

Here is the catch, stated plainly: the API and webhooks require your shop to be on the MAX plan. If you are not, the direct door simply is not available to you, and any honest quote has to say so before it prices the build.

Access itself is simple — maybe too simple. Your account generates a single API key, and that key is unscoped, meaning it effectively carries full-account access rather than access to just the parts an automation needs. That key has to be handled under strict credential care, and the risk should be flagged to you in writing by whoever holds it. The vendor also offers no API support, which is worth knowing before your whole follow-up system depends on it.

Can automate

Can’t automate

Hidden gate: Two gates, both yours to decide with eyes open. First, API + webhooks require the MAX plan — if you are not on it, the choices are upgrade (your cost, your call, never buried in a quote) or drop to a bridge or our-side-only design, and the quote should say which. Second, the single unscoped API key is effectively full-account access — treat anyone asking for it casually as a red flag.

Build fit — what this platform supports well

What this means for your shop

If you are already on MAX, you are sitting on the best trigger set in this directory, and most follow-up automation is realistic. If you are not on MAX, do not let a builder quietly assume you will upgrade — that is a real cost decision that belongs in the open, next to the fallback design that works without it.
